Do these 5 things to Detox

We all realise we live in a toxic world. Toxins which enter our body suppress our immune system, steal our sex drive make us sick, give us cancer or they age us.

Over the last few months i have been chatting with about the bodies detoxification pathways, today i am going to give you the keys to making our detoxification pathways work efficiently.

After all The air is toxic, the water is toxic, we clean our house with toxins and our food chain is riddled with them.

Occasionally we like to consume toxins because they make social events more fun and music sound better. Some times we consume them to kill cancers, viruses and bacteria that have gotten out of control inside our body.

This makes for grim reading but there are things that we can do to rectify this situation and give our body the tools it needs for the job

Remember detox happens in a few phases and we want to support all three

There is the first bit where the body mobilises toxic waste with B-vitamins making toxins easier to move.

The second bit is the crucial step. Your body uses a range of nutrients and importantly the king of antioxidants GLUTATHIONE (pronounced “gloota-thigh-own”) to detox, it does this with the help of amino acids and it will take those amino acids from your muscle tissue if need be.

The next bit is elimination via breath, sweat, urine and feces.

Lets start with the easy bits.

Warning: i am not obsessed with supplements but for most of us they are vital for getting detox right. If you have been eating to one of my plans in the past some of this may not be necessary.

Take these 5 supplements religiously every day.

Fish oil tablets, milk thistle and a multivitamin in capsule form not tablets.

Get a good probiotic from your reputable health food store. Do not go to Coles and buy Yakult. Finally a greens supplement such as vital greens or my favorite “100% Organic Super Greens”.

You must drink green tea every day and you need to have more water than you do now.

Start and finish your day with liquids. You probably need it for your supplements.

Exercise to increase elimination of toxins and most importantly to increase the rate of tissue turnover in the body

You need to eat more vegetables herbs and spices than you do at the moment. Actually, you need to eat veggies at each meal; including breakfast. Focus on veggies with sulfur in them like onions garlic cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale and broccoli.

Three cups a day minimum. Add a teaspoon of cinnamon and turmeric and uses cloves whenever possible in your cooking.

Have 1-2 serves of fruit but make sure it has dark skin, the darker the skin the greater the antioxidants within.

Finally you need to increase the amino acids in your diet, a source of lean protein at each meal will help but I recommend using branch chain amino acids before during and after you train. I’m going to assume you train three to five times a week.

A whey protein supplement that hasn’t been heat treated is also a good bet.

So this is the minimum required to detox, this should actually be a part of your life day to day. That mean Forever not just for two weeks after you have been partying or eating to much.

Start with these and you will dramatically improve your health.

There is however some more complicated things you can include which will make a big difference to your result.

Buy imunocal a product which will help to raise your glutathione. Its clinically proven to improve detoxification, your immune system and is a powerful antioxidant.

Supplement with Vitamin D3. Particularly if you get less than 20minutes a day in the sun at noon without sunscreen. For most Australians that is all of us.

Try having a sauna once a week to increase elimination if possible have an infra red sauna. I love having a sauna and jumping in the pool at icebergs in Bondi, great for elimination of toxins and a handy reminder that you are alive.

Detox is really important for our health and wellbeing you need to start implementing at  least one of these ideas. What is Detox?

For most of us the mention of detox makes us envisage yoga, wheatgrass and strange 5 day juice diets. However detox is really the science of our bodies’ ability to excrete waste.

Chemicals and toxins enter our bodies from so many sources.                                     Its really scary because toxicity and resulting inflammation have been associated with most of the major causes of ill health and death including cancer heart disease, dementia, Parkinson’s, chronic fatigue, arthritis, menstrual problems, digestive disorders such as IBS and various allergies.

What I want to discuss over the next few weeks is how to enhance your bodies’ ability to remove waste and thus reduce the amount of toxins doing you harm.

A great starting point is to reduce our total chemical load. That is cut down on the number of chemicals that enter our body through our skin in make up, soaps, creams, face wash etc. Our mouths in processed food and drinks, medicines, chemicals.

Chemicals in our water and our lungs from smoking and breathing any air that has coincided with the industrial revolution.

Each extra chemical you add makes it more difficult for your bodies’ waste disposal unit to get rid of rubbish. So, cut where you can. If you cant say no to putting on foundation, start eating fresh organic produce and drinking purified water. What ever combinaiton works for you.

The scary thing is this, some of us are genetically bad detoxers.                                   This means that we suffer disease and disfunction from a much lower load of chemicals than other people. We need to pay attention to how we detox.

Detoxification takes place in three stages. You can imagine its like cleaning up after a party.

  • Stage one you collect all the cans and bottles and put them in garbage bags.
  • In stage two you mobilise the rubbish and put it in your council bins.
  • In stage three the rubbish is collected and taken away from the home.

Each stage of detox has specific requirements

In stage one your body uses B-vitamins as rubbish bags to collect toxins.                  This process mobilises toxins which makes them easier to move but also makes them more poisonous. Once it’s collected the rubbish needs to be taken out immediately or it will stink up your house

Stage two is thus crucial in the process otherwise mobilsed toxins will be backed up in your body, overwhelming your liver and increasing toxicity.                                         Stage two requires the mother of all antioxidants, the master detoxifier and maestro of the immune system: GLUTATHIONE (pronounced “gloota-thigh-own”).

Glutathione is naturally manufactured in the body from three amino acids—cysteine, glycine, and glutamine. Glutathione is a “sticky”, which allows toxins and free radicals to attach to it and begin the detox process. It also uses a large amount of amino acids.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are what make up your muscles. Your body will literally tear down your muscle so that it can detoxify itself.

In the third stage the body eliminates toxins via four methods, breath, sweat, urine and faeces. Make sure that all you elimination routes are operating properly and yes sweating it out does work so hit the sauna and pool after your big nights out.

My next note is about the practical steps you can take to improve your bodies detoxing capabilities. If i can get 5 likes of my Facebook page ill send it out early.

Thats not a Detox. This is a Detox

I have heard of many different types of detox.
We often seem to do them after periods of excess.

We cut out alcohol, take herbs, increase our water intake and cut out processed foods.

We often feel way better after two weeks. Then we go back to our old habits.

But have we managed to detoxify our bodies?

The answer is no. We kind of feel better and put it down to the toxins we have removed, whatever they are.

We feel better because for a period of time we eat and drink as they should. However we have not detoxified the body.

So what is my version of a detox?

Well start with reducing the chemical load on your body.
The human body is excellent at filtering out chemicals and environmental toxins.

The main issue is that we continually bombard the body day in and day out with chemicals.
These chemicals radically disrupt the proper working of many of our bodies’ essential systems.

What is aging really? It is the accumulation of damage our cells receive from numerous toxins from solvents, heavy metals, stress, pesticides to radiation and poisons.

A great example is BPA.
Bisphenol A is found in tin cans used for food packaging, some plastics, toilet paper and cash register receipts.

Even in small doses it can have dramatic effects on the body.
It disrupts our system of hormonal checks and balances, the endocrine system. BPA does so by mimicking other hormones.

Recent research shows that exposure to BPA causes our bodies to release twice the amount of insulin necessary. This leads to a host of problems but particularly obesity and diabetes. This is just one of many negative effects

An estimated 90 percent of people in developed countries have BPA circulating in their blood at levels often higher than the threshold for causing hormone disruption used in this research.

BPA is just one of a larger cocktail of at least 20 endocrine disruptors commonly used in everyday items, like soap, moisturisers, shampoo, household cleaning products and cooking containers. This includes scary chemicals like including phthalates, nicotine, dioxin, arsenic and tributyltin.

Further, obesity and diabetes aren’t the only risks posed by the chemicals.
Studies also show at links with cancer, infertility, heart disease and cognitive problems.

Individual chemicals are studied for their effect on the body, some are not. Many are cleared under certain concentrations as safe.

Even more importantly what nobody is studying is the effects of combinations of hundreds of chemicals working on the body day in and day out.

Have a look at the list of ingredients on the chemicals you put into your body before work.

Tooth paste, body wash, mouth wash, deodorant, toilet paper, moisturiser, make up, the chemicals in your breakfast cereal and milk.

That is all before you leave the house.

If you want to detox you need to have a good hard look at the amount of industrial chemicals entering your body on a daily basis.

When you take stock it can be a little over whelming and difficult to know where to start.

So I’m going to give you a few easy achievable methods to reduce the levels of BPA entering your body.

  • Stop accepting receipts. If you need to take them try not to handle them.             Receipt paper is coated in BPA which enters your body through your skin.             Don’t leave them in your wallet either.
  • Stop eating out of cans. Tin cans are coated in BPA.                                         That means that all that time your Baked Beans are sitting on the shelf at the      supermarket and your house, BPA is leaching into them.

Do you think that you can adopt these two habits?
If not just pick one and run with it for the next two weeks.

They are both a great place to start.
Every two weeks is am going to introduce a new habit.
I want you to master at least one between now and then.

By the end of the year you will have significantly reduced your chemical load helping you combat disease and ill health.

Detox done for two weeks with lemon and
cinnamon is a bit of fun a detox done right can improve your long term health

Note:
It is often a sign of bad writing about science when people use phrases like “linked to”, “some studies show” and so on.

However in the case of BPA and endocrine disruptors generally it seems as if we at a tipping point in mainstream science that these chemicals are really harmful

Overeating for Even Short Periods Leads to Long Term Weight Gain.

Even periods as brief as four weeks of overeating can have long lasting effects on your weight and levels of body fat. A study done by Swedish researchers showed that overeating for just one month can cause changes in body fat composition that last for years.

18 healthy young adults who were in a healthy weight range were split into two groups. The study group increased their calories by 70% which was achieved in most cases by eating two fast food meals per day. They were also limited to 5000 steps per a day which equates to the activity level of a sedentary person. The other half retained their usual eating and exercise habits.the trial went for four weeks Both groups body composition and weight were recorded for the next two years.

Here is the alarming news

  • The people who increased their food intake for four weeks gained an average of 6.5 kilos
  • After six months, only one-third of those participants had returned to within half a kilo of their initial body weight
  • After one year The study group also had an increased fat mass and higher LDL cholesterol levels
  • After 2 years the study group were on average  1.5 kilograms heavier
  • After 2.5 years, the group that binged for four weeks continued to gain weight while weights in the control group were stable

The takeaway?

Binging for even periods of time as short as a month can make it very difficult to maintain your weight and body composition.
